Key ingredients in all of our baked goods benefit greatly from pollinators! “Cherry” can refer to a variety of species and cultivars, but the ones mainly consumed in the US are either of the species Prunus avium (sweet cherries) or Prunus cerasus (sour cherries). Sweet cherries are known to be self-infertile, so insect pollination is vital for their fruit production. As with many commercial crops, managed honey bees are commonly used, but bumble bees, mason bees, and different types of solitary bees are also effective pollinators. Hoverflies and butterflies have been observed visiting cherry blooms as well. On the other hand, sour cherries are self-fertile, but visits from insect pollinators are believed to help improve their yield.
